The chamber dates back to 1933 during that period it was mostly run by industrialists under the name Uganda Chamber of Commerce. In 1998, it was re-vitalized and re-registered as a company limited by guarantee without share capital under the companies Act (CAP 85) under the name Uganda National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (UNCCI).

Today, the Chamber is a vibrant organisation with committed leaders and an active Secretariat capable of serving member companies, the business community at large and interact actively with government and the donor community. UNCCI has a membership comprising of close to 500 small, medium and large enterprises drawn from both the private and public sector.

The Mission of UNCCI is to strengthen the private sector in Uganda through effective business representation and advocacy by lobbying Public Partners for a favourable business climate.

At the helm of the organisation is the Board of Trustees; these are prominent business men and women, who are entrusted with the properties and assets of the Chamber.

The Board of Directors, headed by the President of the Chamber, these formulate the policies of the Chamber and are elected by the Delegates Conference, which is the highest decision making organ of the Chamber.

The Secretariat implements the policies and decisions of the Board of Directors and handles the day to day operations of the Chamber. The UNCCI has Country wide District branches (Regional Chambers) in all 56 districts of Uganda and 6 Sub-Branches in Kampala District alone. The district branches are grouped into 10 geographical regional Chambers of Commerce where a Director who sits on the National Board of Directors heads each region.

The Structure of the Chamber is completed by fully paid up members who are individual businessmen and women, private and public companies, import and export companies, manufacturing firms, companies in the service industry, multinational companies and foreign firms with offices in the country.
